Zalo Supports Natural Disaster Prevention in Vietnam With 78.3 million monthly active users, Zalo understands both the power of its platform and its social responsibility to deliver meaningful value to people's lives. Over the years, Zalo has partnered closely with the The Directorate of Water Resources and Disaster Prevention and Control, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, and numerous provincial authorities to support disaster preparedness and response efforts across the country. During natural disasters, urgency and speed are critical. Delivering alerts through Zalo ensures that information reaches people quickly and accurately, without the risk of misinformation or false reports. Through the Zalo platform, ministries and departments can provide timely, reliable updates on storms, floods, and essential guidance for staying safe during disaster seasons. In 2024 alone, Zalo supported authorities in sending over 265 million disaster-prevention messages, a fivefold increase compared to 2023. The Directorate of Water Resources and Disaster Prevention and Control accounted for more than 231 million of these messages, followed by provincial agencies such as the Hanoi Department of Information and Communications (nearly 23 million), Quang Ninh e-Government (nearly 4 million), Quang Nam 1022 (1.5 million), Ha Giang Department of Information and Communications (1.5 million), Thanh Hoa Department of Information and Communications (1.6 million), and Da Nang 1022 (over 2.1 million). During Typhoon Yagi alone, there had been 77 million messages via Zalo Official Accounts. In severe disaster situations, Zalo activates the SOS feature to help people seek assistance from nearby users or local authorities. Zalo SOS offers two main functions: Status Update and Request Support. Status Update allows users to share their safety status (“I am safe” or “I am in difficulty”) along with specific details. With Request Support, users can connect to relief teams or reach emergency hotlines directly through the “Vietnam Disaster Prevention” Zalo Mini App. In addition to allowing people in distress to notify their friends and family via their Zalo Timeline, the “Zalo SOS Map” displays the real-time location and status of those in urgent need of help. This enables rescue teams and nearby communities to easily identify areas requiring assistance and allocate resources efficiently. Thanks to its contributions, Zalo has received commendations from many agencies nationwide. In its letter of appreciation to Zalo, the Ha Giang Department of Information and Communications emphasized that timely and accurate communication to every citizen is crucial to minimize disaster damage. The department noted that with Zalo OA integration, many households were able to receive alerts and preventive guidance in time, helping them respond effectively and reduce losses. Zalo’s ongoing collaboration with agencies from the central to local levels stands as strong proof of how technology can deliver real, life-saving value far beyond the “virtual world.” Zalo Connect Supporting Vietnam Through the Pandemic In August 2021, during strict lockdowns and hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Zalo launched Zalo Connect. Zalo Connect enabled people to quickly seek emergency help from the community for food, medicine, and essential supplies, or connect with doctors and medical experts for remote consultations during the lockdown. As the pandemic worsened in Ho Chi Minh City and nationwide, technology became an essential solution to help citizens support one another while limiting virus transmission. Through Zalo Connect, individuals and volunteer groups could immediately identify people in need within their vicinity, enabling rapid, community-driven assistance while still complying with distancing measures. Zalo Connect was recognized as one of the “Innovative Vietnamese Technology Solutions” at the Tech Awards organized by VnExpress.net.
